Comfort in the Guardrails

Guardrails. Simple tools designed to help us and keep us safe in situations or conditions that might be a challenge.  There is comfort in the guardrails. They provide consistent, reliable support to keep us moving in the direction we want to go.

But… life doesn’t come with a map. We will all experience twists and turns, from everyday challenges to more difficult events with longer lasting impacts.  Though everyone responds to these experiences differently, there is new research that suggests having consistent strategies in our routine can be like “guardrails” for our well-being.

We do things daily to stay physically well. Perhaps we eat healthy meals or exercise. Maybe we take a multi-vitamin or drink lots of water. When we are sick or something hurts, we have strategies to help our physical health. Often though, we need a little extra reminder or gentle nudge to look after mental health in the same way. Taking care of our well-being through daily actions—just like we would take care of our body—may help during challenging times. Yes, we will veer off, but we can rely on the tools we have in place to be a source of stability during uncertain times.

In today’s Wellness Wednesday, we look at the five ways to well-being and how integrating these simple strategies could be “guardrails” to support our mental health.

Try this:

As a class, group, or family:

  • Watch the video “Five Ways to Well-being” (https://youtu.be/kBBOCEFxo_0) about the five evidence-based strategies to improve your overall mental well-being.
  • After the video, discuss the five simple actions that can be integrated daily to help improve your overall well-being in your everyday life
  • Make a list of some ways that you can include these actions in your life: connect, be active, take notice, give, keep learning.

Ask yourself, there is no wrong answer:

How do you see these used in your life?  Do you think personal “guardrails” could be a helpful tool?

Connecting to our faith:

"We will never be disillusioned or lose our way if we are guided by God." (Pope Francis)

God is consistent. He remains with us always, especially during difficult, uncertain times. Easter is a time to reflect on God’s unwavering love for us and the Resurrection reminds us that nothing is too great for Him to achieve.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)

By the Holy Spirit, Jesus was raised from the dead and God’s grace was given to us.  We can find comfort and security in knowing that we can put our trust in Him in times of need.  The resurrection gives us hope for the present and for the future. Jesus renews all things, hope is a constant miracle. Christ is the reason of our hope.
