Recreation Programs

The philosophy of our Physical Recreation Program includes the opportunity for skill development by all students through a program that fosters maximum participation. The current program was initiated in the 1970-71 school year and to this day is based on MAXIMUM PARTICIPATION aimed at serving the needs, interests, and skill level of all students regardless of ability, location and socio-economic background.
  1. To keep the primary aim of our schools as the guiding light in the operation of physical activities for our children, participation in sports programs MUST “...exist to provide an educational atmosphere which fosters the spiritual, intellectual, aesthetic, physical and social growth of all our students to enable them to live and contribute as responsible Catholics in any society”.  Participant behaviour during athletic pursuits must reinforce and extend this philosophy – not destroy it.  As a department, we must ensure that any barriers to implementation are addressed.
  2. To serve the total recreational needs of all students through a carefully planned program of activities which reaches the largest number of individuals, the greatest number of times and has such breadth and variety to serve all interests.
  3. To serve the recreational needs of children with physical and developmental disabilities by including them in all recreational activities and modifying events and equipment where necessary.
  4. To emphasize events and activities that will have both in-school value and later adult carry-over attraction.  These events must be sponsored and operated in such a way that the maximum in enjoyment, social value, and sportsmanship will prevail.  Health is to be carefully safeguarded at all times.
  5. To address any forces that may reduce the maximum of sociability and good will among all students and staff members participating.
  6. To monitor and evaluate the most efficient methods for arrangement of competition, encouraging competition for the fun of playing and not for possible rewards.

The Educational Gymnastics Meet is planned to be a natural outgrowth of the Gymnastics Curriculum.  Therefore, it will include floor, mat and apparatus work. Educational Gymnastics, as presented in the written Physical Education Program, will be emphasized, which means that movements devised by the students as well as traditional gymnastics movements will be stressed. Of course, technique, performance and the ability to meet the required elements will be vital judging components.

The purpose of this activity is NOT to create a highly competitive situation, but rather to do the following:

1. Give students a reason to practice and perfect their gymnastic movements beyond the point that is normally demanded by the in-class situation.

2. Provide both students and teachers with the opportunity to observe students from various schools so that a wide variety of gymnastic ideas may be shared among interested people in our schools.

A Kin-Ball game is played between three opposing teams of four players each on the court. The objective of this sport is for the team whose color is called to catch the ball with any part of the body before the ball touches the ground. The team that catches the ball hits it back to another team and the play continues if no faults are committed. When a team commits a fault, one point is given to each of the other two teams.

Tchoukball encourages one aim, the avoidance of conflicts and the perfection of play. During the course of the game the players are not permitted to interfere with players of the other team; they may not intercept a pass, interfere with the person carrying the ball or stop a player from taking a shot. The defending team instead positions themselves to defend the ball against the Tchouk!

This event honours Hans recognizing his twenty-five years of service in bringing recreation programming to all students in the district. As a passionate believer in maximum participation, he worked tirelessly to ensure that every student was given an opportunity to develop the physical skills that would lead to the enjoyment that comes from being part of a team. This approach to physical recreation allowed Hans to touch the lives of thousands of students over three decades. The renaming of this event means that every spring, students, parents and teachers will be reminded of Mr. Janssen’s contribution to our system, as well as his vision of a physical recreation program for all students.
